Diwali Light

Diwali, or Deepavali, is one of India’s biggest festivals.  It is celebrated all over India as well as in other countries, for five continuous days falling  between mid-October and mid-November - the actual date depends upon the cycles of the moon.

This year, in 2011, the Festival of Lights is celebrated on October 26th.

There are several historical stories about the ancient origins of Diwali depending upon which area of India you hear it from, but the common thread throughout denotes a celebration of the triumph of good over evil, and the hope that comes with finding light in the darkness and the spreading of love instead of hatred.   It is also known and celebrated in gratitude for a bountiful harvest which, this year in central Alberta, has been abundant.

Each day of Diwali represents one of the ancient Hindu stories associated with this celebration, and the middle day is known as theFestival of Lights.

Traditional Diwali Lights

Symbolically, on this day, lamps and candles are lit throughout homes and public places and there is joyous celebration and ritual that has been passed down from generation to generation.  Gifts are exchanged and special food and sweets are prepared for family gatherings.

Just as families in India and throughout the world are celebrating Diwali, so we here in Red Deer, Alberta, will join together in celebration with Anil and his staff at the Sangam Restaurant in the Coronation Inn.  Anil invites you to come in on October 26th for a special Diwali meal and to celebrate the Festival of Lights with the Sangam family.

Diwali date changes every year as the day is calculated according to the position of the moon.

According to Hindu reckoning, the date of Dawali falls on the 15th day of the dark fortnight in the auspicious Hindu month of Kartik or the month of October/November in English Calendar.

Diwali is one of the biggest festival of Hindus, celebrated with great enthusiasm and happiness in India. The festival is celebrated for five continuous days, where the third days is celebrated as the main Diwali festival or ‘Festival of Lights’. Different colourful varieties of fireworks are always associated with this festival. On this auspicious day, people light up diyas and candles all around  their house. They perform Laxmi Puja in the evening and seek divine blessings of Goddess of Wealth. The Festival of Diwali is never complete without exchange of gifts. People present Diwali gifts to all near and dear ones.
